  1. The Canon Rebel XTi and 18-55mm lens is a good entry level DSLR. The price is what I would expect to find.

  2. First of all, the XTi is a fantastic camera. What's more, it was recently replaced by the Canon XSi, so you can get a great deal on an XTi.

Second of all, do NOT order anything from FotoConnection - these guys are scam artists: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Fot...

Here's a list of reputable stores (I don't know off the top of my head who has the very best price, but in all likelihood it will be one of these guys)

    http://www.amazon.com

Third, Ignoramus makes a case for the Sony A200 but I disagree with his conclusion. Everything he says is true, but several of his arguments concern advanced features that you will probably never use or miss (Kelvin white balance, spot meter, off camera wireless flash). If you look at which camera produces the best image quality in the hands of an average user, the Canon wins.

If you want to save a buck - in case the actual price of the XTi is a bit disapointing - get a Nikon D40 instead. You can find a D40 with an 18-55mm lens for about $470.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of these cameras and you can click on any model for an in-depth review. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_...

I personally use a Nikon D200 dSLR so I have no interest in plugging Canon or dissing Sony as a brand - I'm just looking at the best bang for the buck.

  3. Good camera, lousy seller. I checked them at http://www.resellerratings.com and they have a 2.1 out of 10 rating. Forget Foto Connection and shop at:

  4. Yes, it is a good entry level dslr. But if you are not adverse to looking at other brands, check out the Sony Alpha A200.

It goes for a little less and has lots more feature such as:

    1. It offers spot metering while the Canon does not.

    2. It offers manual Kelvin colour temperature adjustments for better white balance settings. The Canon does not.

    3. It has Super Steady Shot (SSS) an in-body image stabilization mechanism that give you image stabilization with any compatible lens you care to attach to it rather than having to buy specific IS lenses.

    4. The kit lens offered by Sony is 18mm to 70mm compared to 18mm to 55mm with the Canon.

    5. The Alpha A200 is wireless TTL flash ready with a purchase of just one other external Sony flash unit.

  5. Good camera, great price, not a good site to order from.
