Right now, I am out of shape. I am not in the best shape. I'm fat but I also have muscle. But not like fat-fat. I've played sports my whole life. Soccer, indoor hockey, tennis and now basketball. I am a very good shooter and I can drive in good. When ever I play pick up games, it seems that I am the leader and I am the first option. And I respond by making big shots and making nice plays. But how could that be? I am out of shape. Does this mean when I'll be in shape, I will be good? Like real good? I know you haven't seen me play, but what I say is true. So my question is, does this mean I have talent and I'll be good when I am in shape. And I am gettin in shape, and I feel like I have improved this summer. I've played nearly EVERYDAY of the summer. Oh and I am 14 years old entering highschool. In highschool, I will committ myself to 2 things, basketball & school. But do I have talent?

  1. What is your height? Are your parents tall? Against whom do you play? Fat faggots or some tough 16-year-olds? Maybe you could upload yourself playing on youtube?

You see, you may be good. But if you wanna be a pro, you have to be sort of superhuman - tall, athletic, talented. I have my doubts and I think that if you really had a big talent, you would be already admired by coaches.

  2. I was like you, I was 6' tall at age 11 and I weighed almost 100kg, so I was fat, probably moreso than you!  I played my first game of BBall at 13, my high school had two teams, the other team was supposed to beat my team because they had the tallest kid in the school (6'4" at 14), but in that game I blocked him 6 times and scored 27 of 36 points for my team.  I thought I had talent, so I kept at it and for the next 5 years committed to basketball.  I never grew any taller, but i got slimmer and had a 70cm vertical leap (I could never dunk though cause I could grip the ball enough to put it through properly) I still weighed 92kg but I replaced a lot of fat with muscle in that weight, I wetnt form 26% body fat down to 16% over 3 years.  I learned a lot about the game, passing, dribbling, boxing out, screens, etc by playing in a Mens Division3 team from the age of 14, I made the state team for under 17's when I was 15 (I was two months too old for under 16's), I had a hoop in my back yard and I would practice shooting everyday and every weekend I would have mates come round so I could practice defense.  I gave up on trying to get better when I was 18 because other stuff happened in my life that I had to go after, so now I'm overweight again but I still play casual leagues and still have some skills left, I also coached for a few years which taught me a lot about the game.

So I say go for it buddy!  Think about what/how you eat and the weight will take care of itself as you train to get better!  As for skills always remember that when it comes to practice it's about quality not quantity, get yourself an instructional DVD ro talk to a coach about your technique and you'll be leading a team in no time!  Oh and also, a good team leader knows whenhe needs to do things, often a team leader isn't the highest scorer or doesn't get the most rebounds or whatever, but their overall contribution to the game stands out, like Andrew Gaze, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, they all lead their teams by example and made the other players better too!  Jordan was the same but he did lead the team in scoring and steals so he's different!

    Good Luck!

  3. Possibly, but not greatly. You do have natural hand eye co-ordination for sure but even if you lose weight don't expect to turn into LeBron James or anything. Still lose the weight, it's good for your health.

  4. First of all, hello boy. I believe you saying you have nice shooting ability, leader presence on the floor, good ball handler and nice clutcher etc... and even if it's hard to judge your talent without having seen you play for true, I can only say based on your story that you have some talent for bball. I am sure of it, if all your says are true. Moreover, if you truly are like in bad shape and you still manage to do this, it's that you have talent. Still, how talented you are for now, I can't say.

The question is now, to know first if you play against good and nice players or just against crappy ones.

You say you are 14, man you have all the future coming, you can still improve a lot I am sure. I can tell you for example, Amare Stoudemire started to play really around your age or even later, and many great players just started quite late. So if you are 14 you can be a good player if you commit to work hard on basketball. After all, you can dream and you really can achieve all you want by working hard.

Finally, if you really wanna play basketball like at high level, just commit to do it, I hope the best for you boy.

The world is yours, you are still only 14!

  5. No It just means that you are depressed.
