my computer is 5yr old, it's an emachines desk top. I think it had about 80g, don't quote me on that tho..I do know that the memory on the hard drive was almost full. I had to install some new software for a new printer that I purchased on this computer. It worked fine for the rest of the day, But the next day. It would not power on. the monitor works, but the computer it self will not. I have changed outlets and all. Does this mean my computer is gone. Is there any hope. What can I do.

  1. Wince. I'll wince for you again. From around 2003-2005, E-machines OEMed the power supply from Bestec. While they build some okay models for HP, this units had a grave flaw. After a few years of use, they'd fail catastrophically. The +5SB would go into crazy over voltage and take out the motherboard or worse. I'd bet this is your problem, and it's pretty common in these machines. If not, you still have a dead power supply, but just not a dead motherboard or worse.

Try borrowing or buying an ATX supply and hooking it up. If your PC comes up, be real happy. If not, put it on Craigslist so somebody can scavenge whatever's left on it.

    Again, my condolences.

  2. Try cleaning the CPU. Maybe dusts there prevent the fan from turning that cause your computer not to start.

  3. Your Power Supply may have burned out, if the thing will not turn on at all (no fans or any sort of activity).

If your fans turn on then it's your motherboard.

  4. Try and start the computer in safe mode by pressing one of the Fkeys on the keyboard when you first startup the PC.

The hard drive should never be full because the operating system needs to have access to free space in order to run. While in safe mode delete or remove some unused programs and files . When you have removed enough junk off the hard drive then reboot the computer.

Remove the latest software you installed before you started having this problem. If all is back to normal don't overfill the hard drive or it will

act up again. Best you add another hard drive or get a larger capacity sized one.

  5. What can you do? Get a new power supply. Your old power supply most likely failed on you. Over time and usage, the wattage of the power supply deteriorates. You can skip the new power supply and get a new computer for a good budget. Check out slickdeals.net plenty of deals on computers. Research specs before buy, most retail manufacture computers give you last gen parts for a unreasonable price.
