Does this mean root canal?

a few months ago at my last cleaning they told me i needed my wisdom teeth out because one was causing decay on another tooth and that if i didn't get it taken care of soon, i would need a root canal.

needless to say, i did not want a root canal so i got my wisdom teeth out.

well, i was at the dentist today getting a filling and when he went to tell the receptionist i needed another appt. (for the one the wisdom tooth was affecting) he said "she needs another 45 minute operative"

what does operative mean?! i really hope it doesn't mean root canal. they would tell me that sort of thing, right? i'm just really freaked out and i just hope it's not a root canal. so please, ease my fears. thanks.

  1. Operative doesnt mean root canal.  And like someone else mentioned if you did need it, then they should have let you know so you can mentally prepare yourself.  Operative just means that he needs more time, instead of just scheduling you for a consult slot.  Call and ask them and see what exactly they have you sceduled for.

  2. I do not think it means root canal.  Most likely if it was for a root canal, they would have told you to prepare you.  To settle your nerves, just call your dentist and ask if your appointment is for a cavity fill or root canal.

  3. I would think its another filling... and this is a choice you can make on your own but - you don't have to have a root canal for a back tooth --- just have them pull it out.
