Question:

Does this merit a vet visit?

I have a 10-week-old kitten who was already neutered and vaccinated when I adopted him a few days ago. He seems in great health but he walks kind of funny - his back legs are splayed far apart. I don't know if this is maybe because of the recent neutering or if it's actually normal. He still runs around like crazy and plays just fine.

Is it worth bringing him to the vet? Presumably since he's gotten his shots and been neutered,he's already been examined at least once...

  1. My guess is he is ok.  All cats walk differently, and his walk will also change as he matures.  I was amazed how differently my cat walks now compared to a year ago, and he is almost 3 years old now.  I wouldn't worry about him unless you notice he is in pain or unusual discomfort.  If he is running around and playing and his appetite is normal, than I think you are in the safe zone.

  2. i would give him a few days so you can better evaluate if its from the recent neuter, or something else. if he seems happy and otherwise normal now it shouldnt hurt to wait a lil bit. but after a few days if hes still walking weird, or seems to be in pain, then yes, i would take him at that point.

  3. Think of it this way...If you were walking funny, would you go to the doctor? There is obviously something wrong if he's not walking right.

Even if the doctor tells you that its from him recently being neutered, wouldnt you rather be safe then sorry? I would take him just in case.

  4. It is always a good idea to bring a new pet to the vet once you get it. I adopted two cats, separately, and one turned out she had a really bad case of ear mites -- which went unnoticed by the shelter.

I would at least bring your cat in for a complete exam, and ask them about the back leg thing. They will also check where he got neutered to make sure that is healing correctly.

  5. definately take him to the vet. just to be safe. you never know if his legs will go back to normal or if something went wrong that they can fix. if there is nothing wrong then any good vet won't charge you anything if you go

  6. as long as he does not seem to be bothered by it it may be from the surgery, if he was neutered in the last couple days give him about a week. if it gets worse or is no better then you need to take him in.
