Does this qualify me for financial aid...for college?

And another thing...How much if not the maximum?

I live in a single family home, my mother being widowed and having an income of less than 20k a year. I get pretty good grades and do very well in school (gpa over 4.2 weighted). I am of Latin descent so i guess that would place me under some minority list, i would imagine (even though i was born in the U.S).

With grades aside, do you think i qualify for financial aid, and if so, to what extent?

By the way, i got a 2300 on the SAT's and am currently a junior on my way to senior year and am looking for future opportunities in a good university (just so you can keep that in mind)

Thank you for your help.

  1. You will certainly receive some sort of financial aid whether grants, scholarships, loans, federal work study, ect.

The best way to do it is apply via the FAFSA (FREE Application for Federal Student Aid) at http://FAFSA.ed.gov

Sometimes, financial aid will be given for families that make up to $60,000 a year. You have a very good chance at gettings ferdeal aid.

Also keep your mind open to other forms of financial aid than federal, such as scholarships like at http://Fastweb.com. Also, the BEST way to finance college is to have a job and save for college.

  2. h**l yes you do.  File a FAFSA and apply to online scholarships like crazy.

  3. yes

  4. While it's true that the FAFSA doesn't ask about race, the schools you apply to if they're private might have scholarships for people of a certain decent.

I don't know if the previous poster has inside info or what, but in my experience $20,000 for a two-person or more home is more than eligible for financial aid. On the other hand, if you go to a private school you might not be given enough to cover it just with financial aid money, even if you get the maximum in grants and loans.

Some financial aid money depends on the state you're in, also.

  5. they have certain grants, and scholarships for certain situations u should look into that ask your high school counselor or a college financial aid counselor

  6. Yes, you most likely will qualify for financial aid.

I would recommend putting in an application for Stanford though, because if your parents make under something around sixty grand a year, they do not charge you to go to school there at all.

It would be a good thing to look into, with your grades and SAT's.

  7. Yes, you will have no problem.

    Good luck to you!

  8. Please do not take all these people telling you yes you will get aid as a certainty. You must file the FAFSA and only your school can tell you what you are eligible for. There is absolutely nothing on the FAFSA that asks about race or being a minority. There is absolutely no federal aid that is based on race. There is absolutely no federal aid that asks about your SAT scores or grades in high school. Federal aid is solely based on financial need and I have seen families that make 20k, NOT be eligible for grants.

You should be eligible for some sort of financial aid and financial aid includes loans and work-study.

There are tons of people that assume financial aid means grants and scholarships that you do not have to pay back.

Even if you do get grants, the absolute maximum you can get in federal grants for the entire year is less than $10,000. Of course that will pay for a community college, but any major university would make you take loans as well.

Student loans are LOANS, you must pay them back.

  9. Since you are going to be a senior soon, I would recomend you get a headstart on planning for fin aid for college.  The Dept of Ed has a new program called "fafsa 4 caster" that helps high school juniors plan by giving them an estimate of how much federal aid they will be getting after they graduate.  Here is the link... good luck.

  10. you get free community college if your in the top 15% at your school

    at least where i live
