Question:

Does this sentence need a semicolon - or does a comma suffice?

The sentence is:

It's a process, one that takes time and practice, with lots of room for self-care and acceptance.

I think the comma after the word "process" should be replaced with a semicolon - but I'm not sure.

Should I replace the comma with a semicolon? Please state grammar rules and sources if possible.

Thanks

  1. A comma is correct. The two commas create a nonrestrictive clause, meaning that if the phrase between the commas were removed, the sentence would still make sense. A semicolon is only used when a relative sentence is introduced. Anything after a semicolon needs to be a full sentence, which the phrase starting "with lots of room" is certainly not.

  2. Comma is all that is needed.

    Semi-colons are not used in simple sentences.  You can use it to connect closely related ideas, such as

    Some people write with a word processor; others write with a pen or pencil.

  4. No, your second clause is not independent because it doesn't have a subject and predicate (verb).  The comma is correct.

  5. The comma is fine.

  6. ;

  7. I think you have 2 different sentences:

    It's a process.  One that takes time and practice with lots of room for self-care and acceptance.

    It's is a contraction for It is and that would be a subject and a verb.
