im really really excited. even though its kinda dumb but i think ive finally, well very close, to mastering the duck dive. i start by as you know paddleing towards an oncoming wave. once im at "the spot" i do like i guess a pushup thing (throwing all my weight into it) and almost at the same puting my knee on the (center/forward part of) board while my other leg is kinda exteneded out... im pretty sure this is how i do it coz its hard to explain when not in the moment. if there's any other advice please answer... its probably useful for me. thanks!

  1. There are two ways to look at the subject. Is it a correct duck dive because it follows the form and movements recommended or taught to you? OR... Is it a correct duck dive because you got under the wave?

I think the second point of view is more relevant. If you got under the wave, and paddled out through the surf to the line up, then it is a most excellent duck dive!  (and, yes, what you described is the way to duck dive.. so your cool from both angles). Keep on surfin'

  2. try this: instead of using your knee, plant your foot near the tail of the board. you'll get more downward force on the board.

from socal, eh? just wait til the waves get bigger in the winter, then the duck diving will really count.

  3. yes. sounds like you got it. Now you just need to master the art of smoothly transitioning the speed from floating to the surface into your paddling on the backside of the wave. when you get that figured out you will be out past the break in no time.

  4. if you can get under the wave then ya its a duck dive, and you will be able to do it better and better as you keep surfing
