Does this sound like a good idea for a future place to live, etc.?

Question

I was thinking about buying a massive land parcel somewhere with inexpensive land, such as somewhere in the pacific northwest, or deep south, sitting on it for a few years, and once I'm out of college, etc. building on, & living on the area... Does this sound smart, or impractical?
