Question:

Does this sound like a good idea for saving gas?

My husband has been looking at the Nissan Rogue to replace his truck. But since I won't be getting paid for 4 weeks of my maternity leave, we've been thinking of alternatives while we save money for the Rogue. The other problem of course is that his truck is a single cab and therefore our baby will not be able to ride in it. So I started thinking about scooters (the street legal kind that can go up 55 mph). If we sell his truck, we'll be able to buy a scooter and save the extra toward a down payment on the Rogue. Now here's the deal, are guys completely anti-scooter? Is not masculine enough to be seen driving? The other problem I'm concerned with is driving it to my office and arriving sweaty/wet from rain/horrible helmet hair, etc. What do you think?

  1. Why not trade the truck in for a used car that's good on gas?  Then you can save up for your Rogue, the baby can ride in it, and you don't have to worry about hemet hair.  I am sure there are some reasonably priced used cars that are gas efficient.

  2. baby cant ride in truck ....so...you'r putting it on a scooter...lol...

  3. stupid idea.  how are you going to go to the store?  Plus you might want to think about giving the baby up for adoption.  Can't fit the baby in a truck, but where in the world would you transport a baby on a scooter?

  4. haha the kid above has a point. why spend a couple grand on a scooter when you could use that as down payment. buy a cheap motorcycle

  5. Yeah, scooters aren't masculine at all, unless your 55+.  Lol Why  not invest in a hybrid? They are expensive, but it will be worth it eventually! I have a chevy cavalier, and I get 30 mpg.  I got an  05 for onlr 9,000!!! Cheap, but nice cars!

EDIT: TRY SELLING THE CAR ON CRAIGSLIST! I got 2,000 more from there for my truck than what carmax offered me!  Any college kid wouldn't mind about the dings if you lower the price a BIT...

  6. A scooter will give you incredible mileage.

In Italy, scooters are ultra-mega-masculine.  Check out Vespa and see what guys think.

You don't state whether you're making payments on his truck and looking to reduce payments.  Freeing up cash flow is certainly one way to do it, but keep in mind that selling a truck now will not get you a good deal, since many folks are trying to get away from lower mpg vehicles.  If it gets decent mileage, especially for a truck, that might help the sale price.

If you buy a scooter, it sounds like you're only planning to keep it until you buy the Rogue ( good choice, btw.  The CVT is one of the easiest ways to save fuel! ) then you're going to take a depreciation hit when you go to sell that.  Talk to a dealer or look online to see if you can determine what a 1 or 2 year old scooter is selling for and how much is lost to depreciation.  If you lose $1000 to depreciation, on top of the payments you're making on the scooter, it's probably not worth it.

Your concerns are valid as well.  Weather becomes a major factor when you have to ride a scooter.  It's nice as an option, but not when you have to drive it, no matter if it's pouring or searing hot outside.  If you pull your hair back, it should be fine, but if you style it, you will have helmet head.  as for the macho factor, I wouldn't care, but that's me.  I look at vehicles as a way to get from point A to B without walking.  It doesn't define my masculinity.

  9. Check on an electric car - street legal type...These things are starting to become more available and cost efficient...I'd lean more in the direction of one of these than a scooter.
