I have to write a paper for my Sociology class and the topic I picked was the effects of illegal immigrants not paying taxes.

Does that sound like a social problem that fits into this subject?

  1. I would class this as a social problem, but, unfortunately it is a bit of a touchy subject that may offend some people, not myself of course. I think personally that i might choose another topic.

  2. Yea, but research seems to show that they do pay taxes and do not use the services. Some because of fear, others because the use others ss#, and just plain ole ignorance.

  3. sounds like economy or political science. sociology... i dont think so...

  4. this focuses possibly more on the economic side than the social side but your teacher should be happy to examine your findings of how illegal immigrants could use financial aid programs w/o paying taxes into them.

  5. It sure is a sociological problem, as long as you focus on the effects of not paying taxes for social institutions like health care, education and schooling, communitywork, labourmarket, etc.

What would interest me is if and how immigrants also self-organize these facilities and institutions, and if and how these shadowinstitutions influence the regular institutions.

  6. ya it definitely is a social problem!! one of the biggest social problems these days is corruption! it has reached its peak and nobody really cares anymore!

  7. of course. i'm a sociology major, and yes, i would say it fits in perfectly.

  8. h**l yes! They don't pay taxes and clog the public health clinics for treatment, every female is pregnant and the men have HIV...and this is the situation in my area...I have seen this...it will break a state's back...
