Question:

Does this sound odd to you?

I find I need more physical space than other people. Like in class, if I don't know someone I would rather sit alone instead of having someone sit beside me. When my professor is standing in front of me during an exam, this bothers me. I avoid crowded aisles in the grocery store when it's busy. I let people go in front of me/pass me to avoid contact with them.

I also cringe when it looks like someone is going to bump in to me or almost touch me by accident..

Is there something wrong with me or is this normal??

  1. It sounds like you enjoy your personal space and don't like it being invaded. If you think it is causing a problem for you or interfering with your life you may want to see a therapist to look at why you prefer a larger personal space than other people. But if it's something you can live with I wouldn't bother just enjoy your space and politely ask people to respect it.

  2. Hey Jesse,

It looks like you are suffering with Inferiority Complex. Why do you think that you are alone and doesnt seem to be intrested to do any work in groups? Have you ever questioned yourself what could be the reason why you are like this??

Coming to the issue when your exams are going on why do you get uncomfortable? he's not gonna hit you or gonna send you out of the class? it surely shows that you are not yet habituated to spedn more time with friends or anyone who is close to you. Try to spend time for yourself and also with your family members or friends. Try to hangout with friends or try to do those things which gives you more happiness or comfort or relaxation something like listening to songs or some outdoor activities like Gardening, Playing etc., this might reduce some what of your inferiority complex for sure... so why are you waiting..Just rock down the world with new kind of angle from you...Show the world that you are different... and am sure that you will get ridoff all the stupid fears what you have in your mind.

So start rocking from today itself...

  3. i would say you closterphobic lots of ppl ae no big deal

  4. You've got issues with personal space and are not comfortable with people being close to you. You don't have Claustrophobia (a fear of being in a closed space), but it seems you do have a slight fear of people getting too close to you - from what you've told us, it doesn't seem like a phobia that is making your life extremely difficult (you are still able to be around people).

Is this normal or abnormal? -- personally I think it is normal as I have this issue too. Although I am able to enter crowded situations, I do have personal space issues - I feel ALL people should be at least 4ft away from me and do not like them getting too close to me. If one were to step into my space, I step back or away. Immediately. Such a behavior is only a disorder IF it interferes with your life.

If you are concerned, I suggest talking to a counselor or psychologist, doctor or psychiatrist.

  5. I would say not.  Perhaps you can talk to a counselor about this?

  6. Its called agoraphobia.  I have (had) it too.  It got so bad I would only go to the mall during the day, in the middle of the week.  I wouldn't go to the club store unless someone came with me.  It got better when I left the ER and went into case management.  Now I work 9 - 5 and its impossible to do things without crowds.  So I learned to cope.  If its too hard to deal with you can try hyponisis.  I found a web site that sells self hypnosis tapes for this.

  7. Appositely normal. Well, not NORMAL like if it would happens to everyone, but normal if you have a mental sickness. That sounds like a mental sickness sorry to tell you :(

Not something out of control, but at least something that needs attention.
