  1. Only by causing the failure of the power transformer feeding your area or a total shutdown of the Power Plant.

There is a remote possibility, (very remote), of a direct lightning strike on your home but, if the power stays on, no problem to the A/C unit unless, there's another, even more remote possibility of the A/C itself being hit or a fire breaks out. The VERY Remote possibilities are there but, very remotely indeed....Not enough possiblity to worry about.

  2. Yes, a thunderstorm can have a dramatic, and deadly effect on a home air conditioner. What most people do not realize is that when a lightning bolt strikes, it creates a very powerful EM spike. That EM field can induce into anything, and quite possible destroy the device.

  3. Air conditioners do not like to stop and be restarted within 5 minutes.  A lightning strike anywhere on the utility feeder can cause a interruption on the utility feeder.  (Recloser or circuit breaker operation causing a 5-second outage)

This will likely cause your air conditioner's circuit breaker to trip.
