Question:

Does too much oxygen affect a plant in the same way too much CO2 affects us?

Excess CO2 is toxic to us because it stops us from excreting the excess created within are cells. Similarly, I would have thought a plant immersed in a high concentration of O2 would have to stop photosynthesizing. Does this actually occur and what sought of concentrations would be required?

  1. yes it does but it would be impossible because there will always be co2 from dying trees, soil compost and animals. The only way that could happen would be if the photoplankton in the oceans would somehow have an overabundance of nutrients they need. The earth would always have a way of balancing out the population though. the earth always finds a balance. :) i love earth.

  2. Actually yeah you answered your question........excess oxygen does affect the plant thats why it releases it......idk the conc for the plant but i gues it depends on the plant and other factor comes into place.....surface area, type of plant, temperature...etc

  3. Actually O2 can affect plant photosynthesis.  More specifically it affects C3 photosynthetic plants (this is most plants).  All plants must fix CO2 in order to create organic compounds and eventually sugars or carbohydrates.  The enzyme that does this is Ribulose bisphophate carboxylase-oxygenase (or Rubisco).  This enzyme can fix either CO2 or O2 -- hence the name carboxylase-oxygenase.  Plants only need to fix CO2 and when an O2 molecule bonds with Rubisco it results in photorespiration, which is basically a waste of energy (the plant gains nothing and loses the energy it spent to fix the O2).  With higher O2 concentrations, there is a better chance that Rubsico will fix an O2 instead of CO2.

For humans too much CO2 basically means a shortage of O2.  We require O2 for cellular respiration, so the lack of O2 is actually what hurts us.  Plants also require O2 for cellular respiration (same as us), but since O2 is a byproduct of photosynthesis, O2 is never limiting for plants.

So in short, Yes too much O2 can negatively affect plants, but in a different way than too much CO2 affects us.
