back?* Or does leaving it on throughout saves more energy? i like to save energy a lot so i was wondering which way saves more..so i turn on the calculator for one problem, write down the answer, then turn it off until i need it for the next problem. ahha i'm like a don't-waste-anything freak! xD or when i go out for 15 minutes, i like to turn off the computer and then come back and turn it on. so would energy be wasted more if i just left it on? or is it better to keep it off and then turning it on? haha i'm kinda repeating myself. sorry!

  1. If you are purely just looking at energy savings then you always save more energy turning things off after you use it and turning it back on when you need it.

However you need to take into account things like wear and tear on the devices as well. Things like a computer, it's not good for the components to be turned on and off constantly but things like a calculator it probably doesn't matter as much.

  2. When a computer is logged off or shut down, a lot of work has to be done to get it back to that operating state... loading and configuring the operating system plus applications you are using.

Not only does this take energy, it takes time, time that the computer must be on and runing at full power.

By contrast, if one uses standby mode, the operating system and applications stay as they were, ready to resume. If the period that the computer will be out of use is less than about 30 minutes, it will be economical to use standby.

When you are also paying for the salary of the user, it becomes expedient to go on standby for even a couple hours of non-use, but that is not because of energy.

  3. That's a myth, it doesn't use more energy to start back up. But I think it is harder on the machine.
