Question:

Does using a DVI to VGA adapter to use an old monitor decrease graphics quality in games?

I'm afraid I'm not getting all of my graphics potential out of my new video card, because my old video card ( ATI Radeon X600 ) had pretty bad frame rates BUT the graphics looks beautiful and inviting. Now with my new video card, I'm getting amazing Frame Rates per Second, but the graphics look muffled and mushy. Is this because I'm using an adapter to convert DVI to VGA? Will that hold back some of the graphics quality?

  1. It could be... but more likely you're running a different video mode that you didn't use before, one that your monitor doesn't handle well.  Check your refresh rate, and try a different DVI-VGA adapter- that one just might be bad.

On most current Flat Panel LCDs which support both, there's hardly any visible difference between using the DVI and VGA connector. But anytime you're going through a $5 converter, quality might get degraded.

What is your new video card, btw?
