  1. when you are more experienced in setting and have good technique it will help you a lot

  2. NOO!!! it really hurts n its 2 big and heavy!!

  3. use a volleyball to start

then after a while strength train using a basketballs.

practice setting 1s,2s,3s,4s,5s,Cs, and many other sets. use a net to practice the height of each set and ask a friend who can hit to try to hit your sets so they can tell you what needs to be fixed or high/lower. just stay consistent and you will beat your friend. consistency is the key because your hitters will always know what to expect.

  4. if yous wanna break a finger.

  5. No.. I wouldn't suggest doing that cause you might brake your fingers!!

  6. NO ! Trying to set with a basketball could break your fingers! When i started volleyball...i first used a ball i got from the local walmart (those colorful ones) and when my finger tips got used to that i started using a regular volleyball.

  7. Actually using a basketball can help your setting...i have personal experience

If you are standing, have another person lightly toss you the basketball and just set it back to them

    or

you can lie on your back and just set the ball over and over again above your head

they both help with your setting technique

  8. Okay.....I would recommend setting with a volleyball first...set with a partner or with hitters so that you can get your fingers and arms working properly and aiming correctly...

I would then suggest using the basketball (no setting yet...) and catching then throwing (as in a slow motion set)...once you get used to the weight, then try setting (be careful that you don't hurt your fingers....if you get tired/sore, then take a few days off the basketball, the do it again...)

Once you have strengthened your arms, hands, and fingers...I would work on setter faster and flicking your wrists quicker...

My coach uses a volleyball stuffed with a couple pairs of jeans so that she can work on strength even more.....NEVER set the actual volleyball full of jeans (this should/will weight way too much...and would really hurt your fingers, arms, hands, etc...)

Hope this all helps you improve your setting and makes you good enough to beat your friend!  :D

  9. NO!!! DON'T USE A BBALL! I'm a setter and they best way to strengthen your fingers w/o the risk of breaking them is to purchase a setters' vball which is the same size as a vball but it weighs more.

  10. A volleyball is better to learn sets. Basketballs can hurt if your wrists are not very strong. Once your setting gets better a basketball will work, but if you set wrong with a basketball you are just asking for a broken finger.

One conditioning tip, take two full cans (can be soup, or any canned food) hold your arms straight in front of you, move your wrists up and down, sounds easy, but done right, hurts. Make sure your arms are straight in front of you though!

    Tips on setting:

Start in ready position ( knees bent, weight over inside toes, low with a wide stance, head up, arms in front of body with bent elbows

Move to the ball don't reach with your arms

Lock your elbows by extending downwards from your wrist

keeping your thumbs together and even

Contact the ball on the top of your forearms, 2-3 inches above your wrist

Follow through with straight arms towards your target

Always pass the ball with a nice high arch to your target

  11. You should start practicing setting with a volleyball first before you use a basketball. This will strengthen your wrists so you don't injure them trying to practice with a basketball. But, once you've got that down, practicing with a basketball will help you get stronger setting and you'll probably be a really good setter if you can set a basketball like a volleyball.

  12. No!!!! I recommend not doing that because A) it will hurt your fingers and B) You have a chance of breaking them

  13. No! I just started volleyball and it's a really light ball so a basketball is heavy and it probably will hurt your fingers. Hope that I helped

  14. ummm..i think you might get used to the size of the basketball if you are using that, but what i do, is a get a medicine ball that is between 4 and 6lbs and that helps A TON and its about the size of the volleyball. what i do is set against the wall and it works wonders! ive seen a big difference in my setting.

  15. That is a common mistake made by people who don't really know the position and think "Oh well a basketball is heavier so it will give him stronger hands" Annhh Wrong.

I am a University setter so I do know the position. I will put it this way...

Does a basketball player use a volleyball to practice his shot....Nooooo :)

Does a high jumper practice by running 100m dash....Noooo

Basically my point is that to get good at something you need to do that something. So if you want to be a better setter then practice with a volleyball, and make sure that you practice with teammates, cause another mistake made is setters just setting to themselves off the wall. Last time i checked in a game a setter sets to a hitter, so the ball will react differently and as a setter you pretty much never have the ball coming from straight infront of you.  Also if you practice with a basketball your muscles are going to set in the game as if you were setting a basketball and then you will be settin the ball into the next state (muscle memory)

So the best advice I can give to help with your sets are to practice, cause out of any position practice is very vital. any chance you get, get some hitters and just keep setting, as you go you will start to be able to adjust where the sets need to be.

If you need any more help feel free to send me a e-mail from my profile and good luck

  16. u no i don't see how it could break your fingers unless your pretty stupid. it would help strenghten your fingers i guess, but you should just get a setting ball. a basketball is too big and it gets you used to that size and not the size of the volleyball
