It can cause eye strain which is just a temporary issue. It can cause no long term damage. If you want to learn more it is called Computer Vision Syndrome and the majority of computer users suffer from it to some degree.

You need proper lighting when you are reading or using the computer. You are straining your eyes, which could affect your accommodation system.
