  1. Yes it can.  The licorice is blocking an enzyme that breaks down cortisol. When cortisol can't be broken down it builds up and it gets stored as belly fat.  Too much cortisol for your body will suppress your DHEA levels and that is a hormone necessary for metabolism...burning calories and stored fat for energy.  So, you're getting fat stored in the belly AND not burning it off efficiently.  Licorice shouldn't be used for balancing, just when cortisol is too low in order to bring it up, like when the adrenal gland function is poor.
