Question:

Does using the Sauna after a swim workout add any benefit, or hurt anything?

Recently I started using the Sauna after a swim workout. Usually I swim around 2500 yards total during a workout 4-5 times a week, so I dont consider myself a heavy swimmer, but not a casual swimmer either. I know there are benefits of the Sauna, but what I am not sure about is whether it may hurt me in the long run, or if its a really a good idea to do Sauna sessions after I swim. Thanks for the input.

  1. Its not a great idea.  While there are some great benefits of using the sauna there are also some risks.  After swimming (or working out in general) your body is still producing lactic acid and your heart rate is still above normal.  The sauna will keep your heart rate slightly higher and you can end up with more lactate stuck in your muscles.  Also you will be slightly dehydrated going in, and more dehydrated coming out - again bad for recovery and not good for your health.

I would suggest taking at least 15 minutes between working out and hitting th sauna.  You should get a good stretch in, push fluids, and take a lukewarm or slightly cold shower before going in.  Also take a water bottle and don't sauna alone.
