Question:

Does vacuuming carpet on a regular basis serve any purpose? Or is it pointless?

I'm under the impression that vacuuming carpet on a regular basis has no point because vacuums aren't strong enough to pick up anything besides surface things such as crumbs, etc. So, does vacuuming carpet that isn't dirty serve any purpose? Or should you only vacuum when you have something to vacuum up?

  1. No, you will still get up dust out of the carpets. I vacuum my carpets once a week and am still getting a full vacuum bag so it is picking up something. I live alone and my carpets don't get much crumbs and such on them.

If you leave the dust then you can get dust mites that will contribute to any allergies you might have.

  2. There’s always dirt & dust you can’t see. If you walk on a floor at all, you’ve put some dirt, dead skin cells, etc. on it.

Just because you can’t see dirt doesn’t mean it’s not there.

  3. According to the Carpet & Rug Institute, vacuuming can remove up to 80 percent of dry soil not caught by mats. http://www.carpet-rug.org

Soil is an abrasive just like sandpaper and scratches and dulls carpet fibers. The more soil you remove the less it damages and wears the fibers. YES YOU SHOULD ALWAYS VACUUM EVEN WHEN IT LOOKS CLEAN.

According to Carpet & Rug Institute carpet can hold as much as one pound of soil per square foot be for it is noticed. However Most residential carpets hold less than 1 pound before it is noticed....

The point is a ton of soil can be in your carpet and you cannot see it.

  4. Weekly vacuuming keeps the dirt from getting deeply imbedded into the carpeting. If not vacuumed regularly, the dirt will cause the nap of the carpeting to break down.

A good vacuuming tip:  When vacuuming, vacuum in one direction, then change directions, so that you'll pull the nap back up. I have a Sears canister vac & it has great suction.

Moving your furniture around in a carpeted room, eliminates worn patterns where one walks all the time. Your carpeting will last longer if you do this every two to three months.

  5. it keeps your carpet brand new. i had an aunt that vacuumed her apartment twice a day and 8 years after she got it she wanted to change the carpet and the carpet guy thought she had just bought the other carpet he asked her why she was replacing it and she explained that she had it for 8 years he was amazing at how clean it was so yes vacuum whenever you can its better for your rug and your health!
