Does water drown you?

Hi all. My mother in law """thinks""" she knows everything. Anyways, the other week, my partner told her that he has been drinking lots of water. You think she would say, "thats great, water is so good for you' buy no. She says, 'Oh Jamie, be careful if you drink too much water it could drown you from the inside' Hmmm, well never heard this before. She then told him to mix with some cordial. Surely water is better for you then cordial isnt it?

What to other yahoo users think of this?

  1. She is correct.

    Beer is best.

    mmmmm Beer

  2. it can.t drown you from inside but you can get to much, it can hurt you judy

  3. I don't know the situation exactly, but she might have been joking maybe?

  4. Drinking too much water can be bad for you, but more because it dilutes you than anything else and you really have to drink a *lot*.  The only way you can drown from drinking too much is if you inhale it instead of swallowing.

Cordial really isn't good for you, especially in comparison to water.

  5. Water is good for you - in order to die from drinking too much water (it does happen, but it's not a result of "drowning) you have to drink way, way more than you ever would do comfortably.

What happens if you have WAY (like 10 liters) too much is the balance of salts in your body becomes too diluted and your muscles (like the heart) can't contract properly, etc.).  This really only happens in water-drinking contests (there was one a year ago that ended with death) or when people exercise a lot and drink tons of water without replenishing electrolytes.

Cordial is not to be added to water - that's just silly to add alcohol.
