Does water kill ants?

can you just wash them down the sink or will they come back up?

The ones you wash down may stay down. BUT, there will be many more to replace them.  

Get some boric acid powder for them to walk in. Or some Terro (brand) ant bait.

Well water does kill ants but it depends on what kind of ants. Like if it was a simple house ant it would kill it, but you must wait. Like humans ants don't die the instant water touches them. You could wash them down the sink and they wont come back up. But i would recommend an ant spray to kill them, much faster.

My cousin used to burn them with lighter fluid.
