  1. It depends on what type of water service you have.

Municipal water service acan come from either groundwater well supplys or surface water supplies. Municipal = you pay someone for you water to you house.

the other service would be a groundwater well that is located at your house. This is a well that you ahve the pump, and storage either in your basement or in your house somewhere. I would assume that you could have your own surface water supply but the amount of treatment needed you probably wouldn't.

  2. From rivers, surface reservoirs and underground aquifers.

  3. Where ever you live, you are drinking water that ultimately came from the ocean.  It evaporated from the ocean, fell as rain or snow, ran into the rivers and soaked into the ground.  Your local community probably gets water directly from a river or directly from a reservior or from wells or a combination of all 3.  Some very dry places get water directly from the ocean via desalination plants.  When water evaporates from the ocean, it leaves the salt behind so rain and snow is fresh water.  You can get glacial water which has been tied up as ice for hundreds or many many thousands of years but it also came from the ocean.  There is basically a fixed amount of water on earth (very little leaves from earth and very little arrives from space) so the water from your faucet may have gone thru a dinosaur a long time ago.  hope this helps

  4. It depends on how your Municipal Utility District (MUD), aka water company, handles the drinking water.  Most places (here in CA anyway) use a variety of methods: some snowmelt, some rainwater, etc.  It can also depend on the time of year.  You can find out where your water comes from by getting a water quality report from your water company.  Often you can download them in PDF format from their Web site; other times you can call or write to request a report.
