Question:

Does wearing glasses/contacts when you don't need them hurt your vision?

I'm near-sighted but my vision is so bad I have to wear glasses to see the computer screen. Then when I want to read something on a sheet of paper, I leave them on. Does reading with glasses on when I can see without them make my eyes worse?

Thanks in advance!

  1. if you don't need them for things up close then yes it does, just as having too strong a prescription will make your eyes worse.

only wear them when you need them.  rest your eyes periodically when you are working on the computer--not resting them will temporarily make you have blurred vision but if you do it on an often enough basis then it becomes permanent.

  2. No not a bit. When you are near sighted, needing glasses for distance, you can keep them on for all tasks. You don't necessarily need them for reading, but don't have to remove them constantly. Your eyes will accommodate for near while wearing them.

At around age 40 or so most people will start to lose this accommodation and need to have reading correction as well.

  3. Yes, it can strain your eyes using a prescription that you don't need.

Elton John never needed glasses early on in his career but used them in his performances and as a result this strained his eyes requiring him to wear them all the time.
