  1. From what I've experienced it's much cheaper to heat my apartment in winter than to cool it down in the summer.

Plus, you can wear a few extra layers of clothes in the house during winter and keep the heat lower.  But you can only take so many clothes off in the summer.  Plus, it's poor taste to walk around naked, but for goodness sake, keep the blinds closed!

  2. It depends on where you are. Here in Brisbane the A/C's are going fulltime in summer and use a huge amount of power.

But in northern canada i'm thinking heating in winter would use more power.

  3. It depends on where you live, what type of house you live in, and what comfort level you can live by. Some people prefer lower temperature and some prefer it warmer. There are people prefer sleep under thick blanket so they have to turn A/C at full.

In general, if you live in the south, the energy bill is lower in the winter months and higher in the summer months and vice versa.

  4. This goes to show how inefficient AC is.  It is cheaper to main a temperature 30-40 degrees above outside temp in the winter than it is to cool 5-10 degrees below air temperature in the summer.  This is a direct consequence of the laws of thermodynamics - in that all processes create heat.  In the winter heat is what you want, so the process works in our favor.  In the summer we want to remove heat, but doing so actually nets more heat to the outside than it removes from the inside.
