I plan on working for my local sheriffs department for a couple of years then I plan on moving to California to become a private investigator. However you have to have law enforcement or investigative experience in order to qualify to get a license, so I was wanting to ask someone who knows if working in a sheriffs department as a correctional officer or deputy would qualify for the law enforcement experience that is needed to get a P.I. license in California?? P.s.: What is the difference between a sheriff deputy and correctional officer at a sheriffs department? Thank you very much!

  1. For most purposes yes, corrections does count as law enforcement. However I am not sure if it will meet the investigative requirements to obtain your PI license in CA. In some places new deputies are required to serve a few months in corrections before they are allowed to patrol the streets. A corrections officer for the sheriffs department is considered a deputy. In corrections you work in the jail. Other deputies patrol the county areas not covered by city police departments as well as serve court documents and so on.

  2. As long as the sheriff’s department you’re working for is an accredited law enforcement agency, you’re golden.
