I'm 15 years old, and I started working out about a few months ago. I also run the 400, and I really want to start winning races so I was wondering does having a build upper body help in sprinting?

  1. Yes working out to a certain point does help. But you do not want to get to bulky. Having upper body strength will help you run faster. Focus on your abs, shoulders, arms, and back. When you work out these areas they will help you with a faster turn over. But dont get huge. Too much muscle mass will work against you and your body will be trying to move more muscle weight than the help that very muscle is giving.

  2. Working out definately helps your running.  First of all, if you run long distances and don't work out, your body will burn protein reserves in your unused muscles.  Ever seen those long distance runners with the real skinny arms?

Second you should lift weights before you run.  Working out burns up your glycogen reserves, and by the time you start running your body starts the fat burning cycle sooner.  Being able to burn your fat reserves is important especially for long distance running.

Third, you should focus on core muscles, pushups, situps, pullups, crunches.  Avoid too much with leg extensions and squats (one time a week may be ok).  You are already running which works those muscles and over training can cause an injury which will hurt you in the long run.

  3. definitely, I do body weight exersises every day.  I have a little extra muscle but it does not hurt me.  It makes me comfortable in a run.

  4. if you never do strength training with weights than yes most definately. i ran track and cross country in highschool and when i worked out my legs i found great improvement. just make sure you don't over do it since you'll be running every day
