oh man, my 11 month old walks around grinding her top and bottom teeth all day and it makes this horrrible noise, like nails on a chalkboard. Does anyone else have a baby who does this? Is this harmful to her teeth?

  1. i used to do it and my parents didn't think much of it.  i asked them about it once and they told me that when i grind my teeth during sleep it means that i was talking through a dream!

  2. yes. i so know what you're talking about.  my baby does the same thing. nails on a chalk board is right. i feel like puking when i hear her do it.  she's almost 10 months old.  i just usually give her razzberry teether to chew on when she does that.

i don't think it's harmful to their teeth, they're gonna fall out eventually anyways.

    good luck.

  3. Emma just recently started doing this...I think it is just something new they discover.  Hopefully it does not last very much longer.

  4. Oh, I know! My daughter does this! She only did it when she got her teeth in, unless she grinded her gums before she got teeth. haha.

Is it harmful? Not usually. But, if it continues as she gets older it can cause problems, such as wearing down the teeth.

I have asked my mom a lot of questions on Bruxism (teeth grinding) since she works at a dentist and she has helped a lot. I asked her how to reduce it and this is what she told me:

Usually they do it when they are stressed (as do adults) so reducing the amount of stress on your daughter, not saying she is stressed, can help reduce it.

Make sure she is well hydrated, because dehydration can play a rule in it.

Later on if they do it, when they are older, she said if it wears the teeth down to much they may, or will, put temporary crowns on the teeth to help. And again as they get older, if they continue to do it, they may make a mouth gaurd to stop the wearing down of the teeth. It won't stop the grinding, just the wearing of the teeth.

  5. It is harmful to their teeth my son would do the same thing, he is almost 8 and he is losing his teeth.  The teeth that are falling out, you can definitely tell that he grinds his teeth. The dentist told me that their is nothing they can do.  He did it both during the day and at night when he slept.

  6. My baby hasn't started this yet, but I'm a grinder.  When I sleep only, and I do know that it is hard on the teeth.  Ask her pediatric dentist and maybe he or she can suggest something that will help.  Or maybe she'll just grow out of it.

  7. Yes!!!

My 1 (almost two) year old did this.  I have no idea what triggers it.  He seems to do it when he's bored.  It's so loud I can hear it from the other room.  I talked to the pediatrician, and he said that they like the noise and the sensation.  There's nothing I can do.  Just ignore it.

Everything I did made it worse.  I said stop, and he did it some more, this time with a big grin.

I give him ice ships to chew on now.  He asks for them constantly.

  8. Yes, My Daughter is 9 Months old and she grinds her teeth as well.

Its not going to affect anything because they are trying to adapt to the new "Pokers" in there mouth!

As long as it doesn't continue when she gets older, it should not be a problem. Try giving her something crunchy sometimes to eat and this should help!
