In most areas, yes you will probably fail inspection.

Get the mechanic to do an engine scan to find the problem, it may be a cheap fix.

Have a scan done on it. In my state if the emissions clerk seems the light he will automatically tell you it will not pass and to bring it back when the light is off so you dont waste your $25. It could be your catalytic converter, spark plugs. Take it to advanced auto parts and see if they will read the computer to see whats wrong?

Are you sure there is really a problem? Here's why...my check engine light came on....I panicked and took it right back to the dealer...it was only a sensor or something...there wasn't really a problem..

Yes for NYS.  I live in NYS / NYC and you fail even before you start.
