Hi, I am working for a small and newly established company in Burnaby B.C., and the factory is in Langley (around 45km one way). If the worker lives in Burnaby and commute to Langley everyday, does he/she get any transportation allowance from the company or depends on the employment contract? Is there anyone commute across cities everyday? I'd like to know what the average commuters do to save from their transportation costs. Thank you so much, any response is greatly appreicated.

  1. NO AND WHY SHOULD THEY???????????

  2. My company doesn't reimburse me for my commuting to work.  It is 40mi one way to my company terminal (I'm a truck driver).  In many cases, transportation allowances are up to the employer, but you may have an option when you file your income tax.  I'm not too sure about Canadian tax law, but if your vehicle is used for business purposes here in the states, there is certain deductions you can take when you file your income tax.

If your commute is hurting your budget, start with simple driving tips, like driving near the speed limit, checking your tires regularly, accelerate/brake gently as possible.  Carpool with a coworker or take advantage of any mass transit if possible.  Consider moving closer to work.  Good luck!!

  3. My company does not reimburse ans there are employees that drive from another state. Some are far as 75 mile.

  4. The cost to get to and from work is your own expense.  The only time you are reimbursed for travel costs is if you are sent on errands for the company, or travelling is part of your job duties.

  5. Most employers do not reimburse for traveling to/from work. Everybody has to get to work, if you have a long commute you can move closer to work or find a job closer to home. You also cannot claim commuting to/from work on your taxes (in the US).

  6. You choose where you live and the company for whom you work.  There is no federal tax allowance for reimbursement for commuting expenses, unless they are outside the "normal" commute.

Now, a company can choose to subsidize the commuting expense of its employees if it chooses to do so.  My company picked up the cost of bus passes or reduced the cost of downtown parking to $50/month.
