  1. The postmark is what counts, not when they actually receive it.


  2. For a payment with a tax return, the postmark is sufficient.

    For a payment on an installment agreement, it needs to be there on that date.  Otherwise, the computer may count it as late and default the payment plan.

  3. The letter to the IRS send via US mail must by postmarked on the day the money is due.  In other words, if you owe the money on August 13th, the letter must be postmarked August 13th or earlier.

  4. it must arrive on or before you due date.  If your payment date is 28th then it must be there and posted to your account by the 28th.
