Does your school district allow you to choose your child's public school?

I live in a state (South Dakota) where parents are permitting to enroll their child in any school they choose providing that there is space available and parents can arrange the transportation. It's state law. My sister lives in South New Jersey and parents can only enroll their kids in their local school if they're going to public school. How is it where you live?

  1. Urrm, every child has an equal opertunity because of exams. They can appy to whatever school(s) they want and take the exams for them. If they fail, there is at least 2 schools where your taken in if you live near and 1 grammer school.

  2. Here in NY we have to take them to the school within the district or the "zone" school like they call it. Some schools will allow you to enroll them in another school depending on their academic needs and such.

  3. We are permitted to have our kids attend any public school within our county, if there is space available, however parents must arrange their own transportation. (Broward County, FL)

  4. We used to have open enrollment like that, but when they changed the district lines, they were so overwhelmed with transfer requests that they no longer allow them at all, except to the year round school.

  5. we cant choose our own schools we have to go to the school thats in our district. im pretty sure though that if you have a relative in the school you can have a waver. i live on the connecticut mass border

  6. Open enrollment is allowed here in Metro Davidson County (Nashville) however each year it is a different set of schools (based upon enrollment) and for only a short period of time and to be fair to the system and other families  you lose all of your other places in line or at other schools  (such as waiting lists for magnets)
