Question:

Doesn't the first amendment say that we should keep religion and state separate?

Here in GA, more specifically, here in my county, we are not allowed to buy alcohol on sundays. Isn't that a religious rule? If not, then what's the point of not being able to buy alcohol anywhere on sundays (except for in bars)? I'm putting this question up on two different categories to see the differences.

  1. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,

So no it is not but you should be able to drink on Sundays if you want, you should not tho you dont want to go to work on Monday with a hang over

  2. No, the Constitution does not separate Church and State. It only disallows the Government from forcing or choosing a religion. Or stopping one from practicing their religion. What you describe is known as Blue Laws and they reflect the general feelings or morals of your local friends and neighbors...

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

    .............

  3. No.. actually it doesn't...

  4. it is not a rule in the christian religion to not drink or purchase alcohol on sundays or any time anywhere, it has become a LEGALISTIC idea for many religions, however. This country was founded on Christianity though, every congressional meeting is opened in Christian prayer, all monetary valued coins and paper money has "in God we trust" on it somewhere, and the first amendment states that congress cannot establish religion, this means they cannot say, "Everyone must be Catholic" or "everyone must be Muslim" like middle age european countries did. This amendment was enacted because of such problems, kings and queens would kill people if they were not of established religion. therefore bringing about the amendments hundreds of years later. Hope this cleared things up a bit!

  5. The first amendment does not say that.  It is not illegal to drink on sunday just purchase it, according to what you have posted here. It is not unconstitutional to make laws like this, it is a good example of why people should pay more attention to local and state elections though.

  6. The first amendment says the state may not establish any religion.  The words seperation of church and state are not in the constitution.  You cannot buy alcohol on Sundays because your state has "blue laws".  Simply put these are laws that say what you can and cannot buy on one of the two week-end days.  They are remnants of our Puritan beginnings.

  7. Laws against liquor on Sunday are strictly inspired by the Christian religion on the theory that you should stay sober enough to go to Church.

Fortunately they don't pass a law that required you to go to Church.

Other liquor laws make more sense--either make it illegal to sell liquor at any time or make it illegal between midnight and daylight.

  8. It's not worded as being a religious observance. And no-one is saying you have to go to church. A state can make any laws it wants, so although you are right, in that this is motivated by religious belief, it doesn't prevent a state from enacting a law if there is no religious content in that legislation.

  9. well those are blue laws, and I agree, it is silly.  You can't legislate morality.  There have been a few Sundays were in planning for dinner I thought it would be nice to have wine, but its sunday and I cant buy it. should have got it yesterday.

  10. The intention of our founding fathers was that the church would not able to usurp the power of the government as was the case for centuries throughout Europe.  Additionally, by not allowing the govt to interfere with the church, people would be free to observe and adhere to their faith as they (each individual) saw fit.  That is why we do not have a "national religion" as you find in other cultures/countries.
