Is there a link to an internet site about this? Was there one specific person like Allen Stanford, Lalit Modi, Kerry Pakcer etc who pushed for a SA Twenty20 tournament? Is there any information on the creation of the six SA cricket franchises?

  1. South Africa became the second country to experiment with Twenty20 cricket, and the remarkable popularity witnessed in England was mirrored in an inaugural season which saw huge crowd flock to games. Veteran journalist Peter Robinson noted that it served to remind a public who had deserted the domestic game that "cricket might still have something to offer on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon." If proof were needed, the match between the Lions and Dolphins at the Wanderers attracted a bigger crowd than had watched a good Standard Bank Cup final shortly before.

    Year Winner

    2003-04 Titans

    2004-05 Eagles

    2005-06 Eagles

    2006-07 Lions

    2007-08 Titans

no one person really started it

The franchise system was adopted in 2004/05, with an aim of creating a strong tier of teams that would create a higher standard of competition at the top level and thus improve the standard of domestic cricket in South African.

It was seen as a way of bridging the gap between domestic and international competition, should a cricketer be called up to the Proteas.
