Dog Walking: What should I do If the dog starts biting on the leash?

Im a volunteer at the MSPCA and I was walking a pit bull. For 2/3 of the walk, the dog was foine, then all of a sudden it starts to jump on me and starts biting the leash and a combinatino of both.

what should i do?

He wanted to play from the sounds of it. Pits need to be stimulated, just a simple walk with nothing going on tends to bore them quite easily.

When the dog jumps/bites the lead tell them no and pull the lead short so the dog walks beside you and cannot get hold of it. And try to walk him/her in areas where there is something going on, something to stimulate their mind.

Hold the leash up while you walk the dog, Straight up. Dont pull on the dog's neck too much (only a bit if he is getting reckless), but hold it straight up above the dog while you walk him (tugging a little on his collar BUT NOT TO HURT HIM), so that the dog understands you have an advantage over him.

Oh god i know that sounds bad but You know what i mean. Dont hurt his throat thats what im saying xD

He must be a cute doggie though xD

walk fast. not giving the pup the chance.

maybe a chain leash might help? they don't like biting on chains..

When you start your walk.  Walk fast like you're on a mission.  Don't react when he does that.  If it gets out of control, make him sit until he's calm.  Then walk again like you're on a mission.

Hi there,  Thanks for volunteering and even walking a pit bull.  I was always scared of them, but went to work in an kennel and dogie daycare.  Now I own two, they are the most wonderful smart dogs in the world.  One of mine is a little crazy and he sometimes jumps up to grab the leash but he's just playing as I'm sure the one you walked was.

Just be patient and if your scared of him please let someone else walk him because as you know dogs pick up on your emotions.  Thanks again for being a volunteer and good luck.
