Dog Whelping Complications?

Now we all know we jump all over the people BEFORE they breed trying to keep them out of a bad situation. And then you have questions like this one : http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiDH0R1fjX9oiwVLiC28Pxvty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080823231225AA8JFhK&show=7#profile-info-e472b0a70d296948d5860a9826132284aa

You expect everyone to say get off the d**n comp and get to a vet right? That is until you see an answer like this "If this is her first litter it could take a long time for the first pup to come. Just keep a close eye on her and if she is still pushing and no pups by morning you should call a vet"

The question was asked at 3 in the am eastern time which meant the dog had been pushing since about midnight. How do you justify telling someone to WAIT til morning in this situation? By morning her dog and the puppies inside of her could be dead.

Is it wrong to expect everyone to say nothing more than Call and or go to your vet and not well wait and see what happens?

  1. No it isn't which is why i always say , "Go to the Emergency Vet Clinic  closest to you. Look in the yellow pages.'

People should always have this info available before whelping starts.

Or have a good vet like mine who is on 24 hour call when my dog is near her whelping date.

  2. Thats why people need to take advantage of emergency vets.

And thats just one more reason to add to the millions of others to spay and neuter your pets before something like this happens.

I'll tell you this too, people that know nothing about breeding (ie; Dachshunds for life) shouldn't be allowed to answer questions like that.

  3. If the dog is in active labor for three hours, that is way too long. I had a Cocker Spaniel that was laboring too long and I called my vet and took her in. He had to do a "C" section on her. If I hadn't taken her in when I did, she would have died, and all the puppies too.

If someone is breeding, they should do their homework first, and not take chances on a dangerous labor or delivery.

  4. This is why they have emergency clinics that are open 7 days a week 24 hours a day so you don`t have to wait till morning to go to the vet.

  5. I agree how long would it take for someone thats havinga  female that is trying to have puppies to get off the puter and call the vet. If they are pushing for that many hours, theres usually something going on... AGREE TOTALLY here!

  6. Hah. I'm thrilled about Dachshunds for Life having a pregnant dog and no clue what to do. Just excited.

I know people get frusterated when all they get is "go to the vet", but honestly, it's the best advice. It's the internet--when they perfect how to disprove all the "vets" that are here and how to pass the dog through the computer, maybe they can start coming on her for vet advice. But qualified or not, none of us are actually *there*, we can't see/examine the dog.

In any case, that's a sad question. I hope everyone ended up okay.
