Question:

Dog Wireless Collar?

My husband and I are about to move into our new house in the country along with our German Shepherd. Since he has always been in a fenced in area, we are looking into alternative routes to penning him up. Since he is a bigger dog also he does need to be contained some, since we are off a busy road and do have neighbors with livestock. I do not want the underground wired system, since my husband really doesn't like the dog anyway- he would not go for paying a lot of money to get that done (and they just laid sod at our house) but have heard about a wireless perimeter collar. Has anyone used one of these? Any recommendations? Any suggestions? This dog is my baby and I want the best product out on the market for him. Please help!

  1. We have the PetSafe Wireless system and it is terrific.  I have a large Redbone Coonhound who is used since puppyhood with absolute success.  We have also fostered the same breed and every one of those dogs, even though trained to "hunt" learned to stop at the perimeter and did not go through.  I highly recommend!!

The only downside is that it is a circular boundry so you may have a situation where in order to accomodate access on one side of your property, you may have to broaden access on another side, giving more freedom then you would like.  Also, the batteries can add up.  Ours only last approx. 1 month, but that can also be attributed to that fact that we leave the unit on all day!

  2. some dogs it doesn't work on. my friends dogs also learned that you can just bolt through it and then your on the other side free to run around the neighborhood.

  3. Get a fence. You can use chicken wire, chain link or hardware cloth around your property. It is cheaper than a wooden fence and doesn't hurt your dog. You could put of a small fence near your house for the dog to have and let him out with you if you are doing work on the property.

  4. Hi, we just bought one last year.  We bought the PETSAFE system.  We purchased it at Tractor Supply Company for around $350, but that included the collar as well.  It is a small base that you plug in a socket in your house...then, you put batteries in the collar on your dog to make it activated.  If dog gets too close to the boundary, it beeps and then if the dog crosses, it of course shocks.  There is nothing burried in the ground and this product works great...until the battery dies and needs replaced, but if your dog does not figure it out, it will always thing it will shock it if it leaves the area.  Great item!!!!  Extra Collars can be bought for the same base!  I would highly reccommend this way of training and keeping the dog in the area you choose.  It is a rather big area, like 90 feet all directions!  Great item!

  5. I know someone who has one and they've had success with it.  I have the underground wire system myself - it's wonderful -- keeps my lab and newfoundland in the yard and out of the neighbors garbage!

  6. i don't have a certain model to suggest but my friend uses a wireless perimeter collar and it works very well

  7. they are good the dog learns to stay in one area. but i use it for my house and it worked great for my lab, but one day he left the area and he ignored the little shock it gives and ran around the neighborhood. it only gives a short shock and when he realized it, he left. so when had to put up a fence. the wireless collar is good and does work. just dont let your dog out smart it.
