Dog and master dumbfounded?

My brother gave me a german rottweiler dog has champion bloodlines in her. She has AKC papers but not in my name. My brother kept the paper's. I've raised the dog for 3 yrs I bought the dog food, I paid for the obedience training, I paid all the vet bills and paid for the rabies vaccination license. I paid for everything no help from him. Me and my brother got into an argument so we don't talk anymore. My younger brother told me that our brother is coming back for the dog. All I want is the dog's paper's and in my name so it won't come back on me later in the long run. I would like to eventually breed the dog in the future. How do I go about this situation?

  1. please don't breed her, thousands dogs are euthanized every day in this country. plus, you obviously care about her and want her around as long as possible; and female dogs that are not spayed have an extremely high chance of future health problems. forget the papers. as long as you have her licensed in your name he can't legally take her from you.

definately gather all receipts and if you have pictures of/with her that will help your case. also, you said you took her to the vet so your name would be on her rabies certificate as the owner. plus, i doubt pedigree papers will hold much weight in court (if it goes that far), 1/4 of the dogs in shelters are pure-breed and i'm sure someone somewhere has papers on some of them.

  2. Well it depends on the laws where you live.  Your brother still has the papers, so legally he might have the right to the dog, but a judge would probably make him reimburse you for all of your bills, so try to get copies of the money you spent at the vets and training and get an estimate on what you have spent on food and board.  If he can't afford to reimburse you, you might be able to keep the dog, and since you have had the dog for several years with no contact with your brother, a judge might side with you.  If your brother "loved" his dog so much, he wouldn't have waited so long to get it back..  Your vet should have copies of your account in their computer, so it shouldn't take long for them to show what you have spent on the dog.  I would bet the obedience training school also has records, they probably have to save those for several years for tax reasons.  Good luck with this I am praying for you.
