Dog ate mini chocolate bar?

My dog ate a mini chocolate bar. she's about 7 or 8 pounds, and I'm worried that somethings going to happen to her. Do you think that she'll be okay?

I've been looking around the internet at the amount of chocolate that can poison a dog, and it says that for a dog my size, it's around 4-8oz. A mini chocolate bar isn't that much is it?

(By mini I mean like the small kind hat you get at like Halloween and stuff. it wasn't a lot)

  1. i'm pretty sure you're talking about milk chocolate.  it should be fine with that small amout.  you might have to deal with some vomiting or diarhhea, maybe even extra hyper, but all dogs are different.

i had a 45lb belgium shepard who would puke after a hershey kiss, but then we had a 40lb spaniel who ate a half a pound of fudge and just ran around like a 2 year old who ate half a pound of fudge.  milk chocolate isnt as bad as dark chocolate thankfully.

make sure he's drinking plenty of water (dont force tho) and just keep an eye on him.  you can call an emergancy vet and tell them and they can tell you what signs to look for, but you can expect some tummy troubles (nothing toooooo serious, just like if you ate something that didnt agree with you)

  2. She will probably be fine.  Here's a guideline:

    On average,

Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.

    Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.

    Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.

Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:

1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate

1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate

1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.

Look on the wraper and see how many oz. the bar was.

  3. She should be OK, but she may get diarrhea or vomit.  I had a Min Pin that ate a full size Hershey's Chocolate bar  (the little brat!) and she was fine.

Just don't let her get into any more.  The Theobromine is not expelled and will build up in her system causing renal (kidney) failure.

  4. Probably not enough to cause toxicity, but keep an eye on the dog for vomiting or other signs of distress.  If happens, get to vet ASAP.

The other issue you will probably have to deal with is the extra "energy".  Between the sugar and the caffeine, you may have a few rough hours ahead of you.  Then comes the crash.  Think of a person who has had too much coffee and then what happens after it wears off...

  5. chocolate is toxic to dogs! Not poison which means they have to ingest allot over along period of time, or a extreme amount in a short period of time. Milk chocolate (which is in most candy bars) isn't as bad as bakers chocolate  He'll be fine!

  6. omg okay you need to do this quick she could get reallllly sick or worst die!

one time my dog at a whole chocolate container bag thing and we had to he him a spoon full of hydrogen peroxide then shake him/her gently! this will call her to throw up the chocolate!

    please act fast..

  7. Your dog will be fine

  8. no, i don't think there would be a problem.

but keep an close eye on her.

if she has dyrae or throws up.

you should take her to the doctor soon as possible.

hopefully she'll be alright, good luck.

  9. You can call an emergency vet and ask them. Usually they will help you out as much as they can over the phone.
