Okay, so, my in laws have a doxen and a chihuahua. My father in law is in the hospital, so my mother in law is staying their with him. And the doxen won't shut up. I mean, I've tried taking him in our room, but he won't stop whining because we have bunnies, so I tried to put him in the room where he normally sleeps with somebody to sleep next to him, and he whines at the door. If I leave him in the living room with the other dog, he STILL whines at our door.

What do I do? Aside from waiting for my mother in law to get home?

  1. um that would be hard to stop a dog from doing, it's doing that because it misses your inlaws give it some benadrill.

  2. Poor guy

Get a crate.  Borrow, buy from the classifieds, etc.  Put some nice firm but soft bedding in it.  Put him in a room, put earplugs in, and get some sleep.  Since he's only staying with you temporarily, by the time you get him crate trained he'll be going home again... but crating him will keep him still, and keep him from being destructive.

He's whining because his routine has changed and he doesn't understand.  It's a natural thing.

  3. The dog is obviously missing his people. You may want to try giving him a piece of their clothing to lay on. It is no different than a child being separated from its parents. He wants reassurance. He does not understand what is going on. Your mother-in-law could probably tell you about some of the dogs favorite things to do or favorite things to play with. I am sure he senses something is wrong and he is afraid. Try to comfort him the way your mother-in-law would.

  4. Doxies are hugely persistent dogs!  He'll cry till he gets his way even it took months!  I think you should ask your vet to prescribe a mild tranquilizer for him to have at night.  Nothing to make him sleep 24/7 but just for a few hours at night.  If you can't afford a vet try making him sleepy.  Take a looong walk close to bed time and give him warmed up dog food to help him relax.

  5. Use ear plugs. You might have to wait this one out. He'll tire eventually. You might try giving him an old shirt of your in-laws to sleep with, as they like to burrow and it may comfort him. Best of luck.

  6. poor fella just misses his owners.  just try to make him drink some milk...  it makes me sleepy maybe itll work on a dog.

  7. Dachshunds

If you want a dog who...

Comes in a variety of sizes (all smallish)

Comes in a variety of coat types and colors

    Is comical and entertaining

Doesn't need a lot of exercise

    Makes a keen watchdog

Is sociable with other family pets, especially other Dachshunds

    Lives a long time

A Dachshund may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

Suspiciousness or sharpness toward strangers when not socialized enough

    Scrappiness toward strange dogs

    Stubbornness

    Notorious housebreaking difficulties

    Digging holes

    Barking

    Regular brushing/combing (Longhaired)

    Regular clipping/trimming (Wirehaired)

    A distinctive doggy odor

    Serious back/spinal problems

A Dachshund may not be right for you

Take the dog out for walks, give it chew toys suitable for its sized mouth, not too big & not too small
