Question:

Dog being put to sleep?

My dog bit my cousin yesterday and she punctured his skin and made him bleed. He was aggravating the dog and i told him to stop because my dog was eating. He didnt listen and she ended up biting him. She doesnt have any rabie shots. We never had got around to doing that we were in the process of getting her the insurance. So they ended up taking him to the doctor to make sure he didnt get rabies. I know my dog doesnt have rabies. My cousins dad is threatning to put my dog to sleep. Is that a possibility? Or what happens can they just check if she has rabies or how do they test the dog?

  1. There is no test for rabies.  But what usually happens with an unvaccinated dog in the state I live in is that the dog is put in quarantine (at a kennel or vet's office) for 10 days.  (By 10 days any symptoms of rabies would show up.) They are then released to the owner and they must immediately get vaccinated.  There is also a charge for boarding.  I don't think your cousin's dad has any authority over whether your dog has to be put down or not.

Parents needs to teach his kid not to mess with animals when they're eating.  What is so hard about that?   (Or you could always get a tank full of pirannahs & warn him not to stick his hand in there...)

Added:  No, there is no rabies test for dogs.

  2. They have to test the dog to see if she has rabies.

  3. FIGHT THIS!  They have to put the dog in quarantine, but they are not required to put the dog to sleep.  You warned your cousin to not do what he was doing and the dog stepped in to defend itself.  This happens all too often.  In the future, if someone doesn't listen to your telling them to stop messing with YOUR dog a certain way, tell them to leave, family or not.

A lot of dog bites are dogs defending themselves and it's given them a bad rep when it wasn't out of being vicious.

  4. How old is your cousin? Your uncle wants your dog put down?

He will probably need to be quarantined for a while, then given back to you. Rabies vaccinations are MANDATORY and you may get a fine for not having it.

  5. You cant put thre dog to sleep just coz it has rabies, they get put down coz they have bitten someone. He could go to court and the dog would need to be put down but i dont see that as fair, your cousin was annoying it and you told him to stop, if he didnt that is his fault.

  6. All of these are excellent answers, but I just wanted to add that now that you know there could be a food agression issue, just be overly cautious when you feed your dog to not feed him around anyone else.  You might even want to feed him in a bathroom with the door closed.  We have two dogs, a cockapoo and a lab/pit mix.  Both have a tendency to food agression with each other.  More than once we have broken up a dog fight because the other got too close to a plate, a food bowl, or a treat.  So when they are being fed, the other is not in the room.  In fact, their bowls are in separate parts of the house.

Pepper, the cockapoo, is even agressive over my food.  If I am eating and Bandit comes over to me, Pepper will start growling and barking at him to get him away from me.  Any other time they will play and act just fine together.

Good luck with this situation.  I am sure that if you and your parents do right by the medical bills for your cousin, that your uncle will calm down and not try to push to have the dog put down.  He is just acting out of emotion.  Rabies shots aren't very expensive and after your dog passes quarantine, it shouldn't be too difficult to get the rabies shot for her.

  7. Typically, if a dog doesn't have a rabies shot, it's taken away to the humane society and put in quarantine for 10 days, to ensure it doesn't have rabies.

Your cousins' dad has NO RIGHTS to take your dog and put it to sleep, only your parents can do this (or the rightful owner of the dog).  Tell your parents the situation, what your cousin was doing (aggravating the dog while eating).  They'll decide how to handle it.

  8. I think you just get a fine for not having your dog's shots up to date.

Now, about her biting someone else... it was provoked. The law protects people against other people's crazy pets, but that doesn't include people being a******s to animals. Are there any witnesses that your dog was aggravated by your cousin? Try your hardest to keep the system from putting your dog to sleep because of a stupid family member. I wish you the best of luck.

  9. It is a possibility as biting and puncturing is a viable reason for someone to press charges and have it euthanized, but since he was provoking the dog AND you gave him a warning you can DEFINITELY fight it. And most likely win. Most animals will snap or bite if bothered around food.

  10. Please don't let this happen, I understand your cousin dad is mad about this situation but the poor dog don't need to be put sleep, you may have to pay the rabies shot for your cousin if they ask you for it and you can be more responsible and take your dog to have a rabies shot they are very ship and can save you alot of stress go to eny shelter they can put the shot, It may cost you $10 or less, please do it and I agree with you it wasn't the dog folk to react that way if he was bother, please protect this poor animal and don't let this happen but be responsible from now on

  11. Your dog will probably be put in quarantine for a few weeks.  You will have to pay for the quarantine and will have to get all of the shots taken care of immediately.  The quarantine will probably be done at the local animal shelter.  They will also give your dog the necessary shots there.  If the dog passes the quarantine, you will get him back when you pay up.  If you don't pay in full right away, it will cost more.  I hope your cousin has learned a lesson.  I hope you have, too.  I'm sorry that your dog had to suffer for the ignorance, neglect and lack of good teaching by the people around him.

  12. Question................Why on earth did you not get the proper immunizations for your dog??!!!!!!??   That is wrong!   I'm frustrated to hear you didn't do the proper innoculations for your dog "on time".

Now, you must wait to see what will happen.  Your dog will be quarantined for 10 days, and the proper shots must be administered.  there will be a fine.  Yes, WITH a FULL AGREEMENT to have your dog receive the rabies shot, along with any other proper immunizations, you may be able to hold him off from insisting this dog be put down.

Please go do the right thing now....................fix the upset, have the immunization completed "now", and someone needs to do some careful talking to your cousins dad.

  13. Chances are that at the hospital or the doctors office he had to say what dog bit him and they would ask not knowing what type of injections to give him.

Sorry to say but you will probably be hearing something from either the police or the local ASPCA regarding this.

If they do come to test your dog they will probably take him and place him in quarantine till they determine if he does or does not have any infections, sorry.

    Good luck and God bless

  14. Your dog probably say your cousin as wanting to take it's food and that envoked a food aggressive. They will test the dog for rabies and probably send her back to live with you. Just make sure you express the fact that you told your cousin to leave her alone and she didn't. This is a very common accurance. Many dogs have gotten bad raps because of things like this.

Just as an extra precaution, post beware of dog signs up and make sure that every one knows not to mess with the dog when it is eating.

  15. i dont get why your dog has to get put to sleep it is your cousins fault because he didnt listen to u when u told him not to bother the dog so i dont think you dog should get put to sleep...........bring ur dog to a vet so they can see if she has rabies theyll give her a rabie shot

  16. depending where you live, i am in california and the neighbors pit bull has bit before. if they press charges they will come out and take the dog , you will get it back ,it took six times for the neighbors dog to be put down

  17. If the dog is at the vet then they are holding it under quarantine usually 10 days.  If she doesn't display any signs of rabies your parents will get a fine and be required to have the dog up to date on its shots.

There is only one way to test for rabies. They put the dog to sleep, cut its head off and send it off so the brain can be studied
