Dog captured a baby bird, what to do?

My dog captured a young bird today, and I guess she broke its leg. It looks like it was old enough to start learning how to fly. The mother bird IS around, and she is sitting in random places in the yard cawing. Problem is, it has a broken leg, so I don't know if it could survive even if the mother helped it. Even though the mother is around, she doesn't seem to be doing anything. I thought it was best to leave it alone, but I went outside to check on it and the ants were crawling all over the baby, it couldn't do anything to help itself. It's lively enough to flap around when i try to pick it up, so it's not like dying or anything.

What should I do?

  1. contact your local wildlife rescue center (google it) and explain to them the issue.  They'll let you know what to do.   They may take it in, rehabilitate it and release it, they may come to your location and try to help, or they may just say to leave it as is.

please leave it up to the professionals!

  2. The bird was injured by a dog and will need immediate antibiotic treatment.  Find a wildlife rehabber in your area or a vet willing to treat the bird.  Dog/cats carry a disease in there saliva that will prove fatal for a bird unless treated fast.  Please bring the baby inside and place it in a container lined with paper towel and cover it with a towel.  Keep the bird warm and stress free.  Do not feed the bird unless you know how and what.

Read my profile and follow the links to Starling Talk.  Amongst the  information you will find how to manage a fracture.

  3. Like the person above me said leave it up to the professionals. They would know what to do. Just try to help the bird. No animal should die painful death

    Hope This helped.

  4. It is usually advised to return baby birds to their parents..but in this case, you need to get this bird to a local wildlife rehab as it will most likely not survive in the wild now that your dog has broke it's leg.  They may be able to repair it at a rehab so the bird can eventually be set free.  Look here for one near you:

  5. Well, get it away from the ants first.

Call animal control or Sulfur Creek or someplace like that and have them take care of it. In the mean time, find a shoe box or something with a puncturable lid, put a towel on the bottom, and put the bird in (be extremely careful of the leg. Before putting the bird in, put a lot of air holes in the lid.

Other than that, there's really nothing you can do.

    Hope the birdy gets better!

  6. Take the little baby into care? Feed him water and seeds maybe? I don't think it would be best to leave it out there on its own... It would have a slow and painful death. If you have any animal cages... Just put like old towels or old clothes in there to keep him warm and a little side dish of water. Go to the local pet store to ask what to feed him.

    Hope this helped!
