Dog in the yard during winter? Is it possible?

I have a JRT/ schnauzer( only five months old).. ... it's got a lot of fur just like a schnauzer but it is extremely active and hyper my mom does not like breeding a dog in our house and we got one to leave it in our yard . now the weather is changing and my brother is keep on saying we need to bring it back in.. is there any good information that could convince my mom to bring the pup in?

OMG, I can't believe you would consider leaving that baby out in the cold.  Have the dog neutered and it will calm down considerable.  Get a metal kennel for the house.  Crate train it so it will learn how to use the bathroom outside.  I have 2 schnauzers and they are not outside dogs.  They want to be near you all the time.  Its only normal for this particular breed to be active and mixed with JRT.  OOh you do have a busy butt.  But with proper training(puppy kindergarten) and neutering it will be a lovable indoor pet for you and your mom.

Jack Russell Terriers and Schnauzers are both INDOOR dogs, they are not bred to withstand cold weather.    My friend has a JRT and he needs to wear a coat in the winter when he goes outdoors.

Since your dog is a cross between these two indoor breeds of dogs,  then the answer is simple - it needs to live indoors.

If you can not provide an indoor home for the dog, please do re-home it to someone who can.  Your dog could very well die if left out in the cold, or suffer frost bite on it's ears and feet.

any dog can freeze its ears,paws and get chilled if they are left outside in bad weather, even my husky who loves the snow will hold his feet up when it to cold. i keep my 3 dogs indoors and i really hate seeing dogs left outside all the time, they need company and to feel loved and seeing dogs left alone all the time is heartbreaking.ur pup needs to be trained and groomed and if u tell ur mom that u will take care of him and do all the cleaning and training maybe she will let u bring him in.u have to prove to her that u can do this and keep up on it, it is a 24/7 job taking care of pets so don't slack off!! ur pup is to young and not built with enough fat and fur to be left outside all the time, so u really have to prove to ur mom that u are responsible and take care of him. my kids always brought strays home and thaey took care of them with my help since i am a dog lover but with some people the idea of having a dog that messes and gets into mischeif can make them shy away. ur pup will have a long happy healthy life being a inside dog and he will become part of the family and love ur mom just as much. ask ur mom to give it a try and promise to take care of him and see how it goes.  if she is still not agreeable get soft blankets and lots of straw inside the kennel so he can tuck into it and keep warm.make sure there is no drafts and a good shelter to keep the wind and sun off when needed.good luck

A kennel won't do, please, its winter. Imagine leaving you out in the cold with a camp and some blankets. How'd you feel? Give it away to a better home or simply bring it in but don't torture the poor animal.

Unless your dog has proper shelter outside, you could be charged with animal cruelty for leaving the dog outside.

My dog sleeps outside. She is a retriever. But she likes it outside. She loves to be inside with us, but she prefers to be able to do what she wants, and she cant do that when she is inside.

At night we rug her in the winter using a weatherbeta rug. They are great, weatherproof and fleasy on the inside to keep her warm. She loves it!

But a dog like yours might be better inside, he is still young, and doesnt have a big wooly coat like a retriever to keep him extra warm. If your mum wont budge, fill the kennel with blankets, and old clothes that smell like you. It will comfort the dog, and keep him warmer :)

I live in Australia though, so the winters arent that cold. Im not sure where you live, so if you live in a colder climate you should really consider making your mum let him sleep indoors.

Hello.  I think your bro is right.  You should bring your pup back in the house.  The situation of your dog can compare to us.  It is hard on us to stay outside during winter.  So, like dogs, they can be as hard on them staying outside during cold weather.  There might be some health conditions caused by cold weather.  Try checking out the link below with your mom, so she and you can fully understand the situation of your dog.

There's a book called "How to be Your Dog's Best Friend", by the Monks of New Skete. (It was a best-seller a few years ago.) I recommend it highly.

One of their guiding concepts is that the dog be treated as a (junior) member of the "pack" of humans it lives with.  So they advise allowing the dog to share the "den". They have a range of reasons, from the practical to the spiritual for this.  

Puppies are, by nature, extremely active and hyper.  Also they can do a lot of damage chewing with their little puppy teeth, easing the growth of permanent teeth.

What part of the world do you live in? What is JRT?

I live in north/central Canada, and it's still way too warm to be worrying about taking animals in for shelter from the weather.  (But blackflies have been a problem.) Some dogs tolerate staying inside, some don't, and vice versa.  She had the choice of being in or out, and my Akita chose to sleep outside in all but the very coldest weather. (She'd burrow in under the snow sometimes.)

Has Puppy been house-trained?  That's an important consideration, too.

Given an adequate shelter and sufficient straw for insulation, Puppy should be ok outside, but it would be good to ask for advice from your local animal shelter.

I'm thinking when someone calls animal control and your mom ends up with a fine or worse that may make her bring the dog in.

Neither of these breeds are outside dogs. It's going to end up very sick if not worse when winter really comes.

This is a mixed breed dog and should not be bred. Spay the dog and bring it inside. If not this small dog probably won;t see spring even with a doghouse. Not only is it open to the elements of winter it's also open to all sorts of illness and at risk of becoming prey for another animal.

Sadly this looks like just another case of the kids having more sense than the parent. Your mom should never have agreed to a dog if she did not want it to be inside.
