Hi there!

We adopted a 2year old female Yorkie/Pa-pillion (4lbs) about 2 months ago.

She was really, really skinny when we got her, you could feel her pelvic bone and rib cage and her vertebra. After a week of some good Cesar and Benefil meals she was, what i think, at her perfect weight..(5lbs-5.5lbs) But lately she runs away when we put her bowl of food down. We need to catch her, or she go without food. Normally dogs tremble over the smell of meat etc. Its not that over feed her, we give her food twice a day, in the morning like at 8:30 and than at like 5:30 in the evening. The amount of food we give in her in the evening is like 2-3teaspoons.

Is there a problem?

  1. good for you for adopting a dog that needed a good home.  some times when dogs have been starved they will eat at first because they are so hungry but once they have been sated, they may stop because some type of trauma is associated with eating.  I would change the foods you are feeding her as they are not very good and your dog needs to be nourished as well as get calories.  I prefer dry food, but take a look for canned Merrick brand foods or Innova or California Natural or Wellness or Natural Balance.  Please stay away from brands such as Caesar, beneful, Iams, Science Diet, Eukanuba, all Purina foods anything that can be gotten at the Supermarket or Grocery (except Wellness which some are selling now).  These are all mediocre foods.   Don't make it an issue.  put the bowl down for 30  min (and walk out of the room) then pick up and don't feed until next meal time.   You might want to get some Nutrical so that she is getting energy boosts.

  2. I would suggest Burns dog food, it has a balanced diet. if she doesn't eat it, then try with some low salt gravy ( not to hot )

    Good Luck! :)

  3. Bethnyc gave you some great advice.  I wouldn't say Beneful or Cesar are good or healthy foods.  Beneful is full of fillers, grains, dyes (all those colored bits), not to mention salt and sugar!  Dogs do not need a food that has corn and grain as a primary ingredient.

These sites have good information on reading dog food labels, and choosing a healthy food.  Good luck, and good job adopting this dog!

  4. I used to have a dog that suddenly went off eating until I started mixing some maple syrup in his food (just a little) then he started eating just fine. guess he had a sweet tooth.

  5. some times if you change dog food they wont like it, but also if they get the same flavour every day they get board.
