Obviously we are taking her to the vet in the morning (its 6pm here, the vets are closed) but what should I do to keep it from being infected?

Its not bothering her too much, she licks it every once in awhile but thats it. Anything I should be doing now to keep it from being infected or from being worse than what it is? It looks kind of like a sore right now.

Thanks in advance.

  1. My Mini-Dachshund got into an ant bed a couple of weeks ago.  I gave him half a children's Benadryl (and then in the morning and that evening).  He weighs 10 lbs and I think you can give 1mg per pound per day but I am not positive-I know the dr told me he could have up to 10 mgs. Within a couple of days the ant bites were gone.

  2. That doesn't necessarily make her not the cleanest, it just makes her a dog.  If she isn't showing a lot of distress, I wouldn't worry about it.  A Benadryl wouldn't hurt, but unless you have a children's dosage, I wouldn't go beyond half a pill--wouldn't want to risk overdosing.  If it swells a lot, try a dab of paste made by mixing a teaspoon or so of baking soda with a few drops of water.  This won't hurt her it she eats it, but it does take the sting out of the injury, and the swelling.

  3. You can put some anitbiotic cream (Neosporin) on it, but if you are taking her to the vet in the morning she will be fine until then.
