We got our 2 year old dog spayed today, she has been home for about 6 hours now. she has eaten and vomited a couple times. she is not keeping water down. She is a pit bull.

She is still groggy and not herself though she atleast perks up a little now.

Im just worried because every time she drinks she vomits.

Should i give it until tomorrow?

She is large enough I don't think she will dehydrate over night, it is 11 PM...

Thanks!

  1. Sounds like she has a bit of sensitivity to the anesthetics. Keep a close eye on her and instead of giving her water give her some ice chips. Let the drugs work out of her system and see how she's doing in the morning. If this is your regular vetrinary clinic you will want to let them know in the morning about the length of time she was still showing symptoms since you never know if she'll have surgery in the future. Usually the meds have worn off by now.

  2. I would call the vet in the morning and see if they think you should bring her in. My dog didn't do any of that when i had her fixed.

  3. Sounds like she is just sick from the anesthesia. If she is still sick in the morning call your vet for advice but for right now there is really nothing you can do until the drugs are out of her system. It takes a while to dehydrate to a dangerous level. Poor baby, I hope she feels better tomorrow!

  4. i don't think you are suppoused to feed the dog or give it more than ice chips or an ice cube until the next morning after being spayed.  i've had several female dogs spayed and never had any of them vomit after being spayed.  don't do more than ice chips or ice cubes for the rest of the night.  if the dog is still getting sick tomorrow morning call the vet.

  5. if she is still throwing up in the morning..ring your vet!

being knocked out makes them groggy and the medication they use can make the animal queasy and throw up. Dont feed her till the morning, keep an eye on her, and leave her a bowl of fresh water

  6. She just may still be unsettled from the anasthesia.. it does sometimes make you feel groggy and sick.  Many animals dont eat or drink much, it at all, that first day home.

Call the vet tomm if she's still not able to hold water down in the morning.

If she's holding down food, try offering a small amount of moist food.. or try some ice cubes.

Are you only offering her small amounts, or are you letting her have as much water as she wants?  Try to limit how much she drinks at a time too..  too much at once may not settle on her stomache well.

  7. I got my doggie spayed today also, she is groggy & sleeping for the most part.  My  vet advised me not 2 give food or water. I did give her a tiny bit of water because we don't have ice. She was looking for her food but she just went back to bed.

  8. My dog was just mas at me for a day.  But the dog should be fine and I think you should give her till morning before you call the Vet.  I don't think my dog even ate or drank the first day after.  But by the next day she was much better and the third day she was back to normal.

  9. It's normal for them to vomit after surgery.Just give her ice cubes to l**k tonight, then in the morning offer her a small, bland meal of boiled chicken and just small amounts of water throughout the day.She should be fine in a few days.

  10. different dogs react differently to the surgery so it's hard to tell right now if she actually needs care, but try to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't get any worse. If she's still having a hard time keeping down water, go to the vet.

But you mentioned that she's perking up a little and that's good!

  11. If shes vomitng don't give her anymore food or water till morning. It's very common for vomiting and lethargy after a surgery. Just let her rest. Make sure her gums aren't pale, otherwise give her time.

  12. I'd try giving her some ice cubes, that way she slowly takes in some water.  She's probably seriously stressed out.  If she doesn't seem to be better in the morning take her back to the vet, especially if she's not getting enough fluids in her. You can never be to safe.

  13. its perfectly normal....she is still under all those drugs and needs to vomit in odrer to get them out of her system...she will be in pain for the next 5 days and wont be in the mood to play or do anything...make sure not to let her l**k the wound as she may tear the stitches n you wouldnt wanna go through that

  14. She sounds like a typical dog that has just been spayed.

although i wouldn't give her water,

    when my dogs got fixed

vet warned me not to give water due to the fact they might throw it up.

and advise i give ice cubes instead.

only 2 ice cubes the night she got home and NO food.

and the next day a little food and a few more ice cubes.

then the following days back to the normal feeding schedule.

Although id call your vet sill and ask.

    Good Luck.

    Thanks for spaying :D

  15. Don't worry. She just got spayed today. Most of my females have not been interested in water or food the night that they were spayed.

Anesthesia is very hard on the body and can make her not feel well.

Limit fluid intake and I wouldn't even give food right now. A lot of people have suggested ice chips and that is a wonderful idea!

If you are still worried in the morning, call the vet and see what they think.

Be sure to not let her l**k the incision area at all! She may have to wear an e-collar if she won't leave the area alone. (I had a female that would not leave her incision site alone, it got infected, and they had to clean the area and re-stitch her, not fun)

    Good Luck with your pup!

Thank you for being a responsible pet owner!

  16. Can you phone the vet? It may not be too serious, if she seems comfortable otherwise. But, you know, coming around from a general anesthetic, maybe she should not have been given food.
