Dog peeing in the house?

my roommate has a dog that pisses all over the house. i punish the dog every time he does it. my home reeks of pee and its embarrassing when friends come over and see the stains. i stem clean monthly at this point. the carpet is trashed at this point. the roommates dont seem to notice and one doesnt seem to care. how do we break this i dont wish to owe my landlord a small fortune when i move out next year.

the biggest issue is one roommate puts her own needs ahead of walking the dogs.

how do i house train a 15 year old dog.and get my mother to understand that she needs to walk the dogs first before sitting in the bathroom for 20 minutes every morning

  1. wow, 15, that'll be a toughy! Probably the only thing really to do is pick out a room, preferably one without carpet, and gate it off completely. You most likely wont be able to paper train but at least after a while that that is his spot to use when he cant get outside. But this requires weeks of only seeing the desired room and outside, nothing else! Its very strict but at this point it needs to be a learned behavior. Make this his room, set up food and water only here, a bed, and try laying down some newspaper, ya never know maybe he already knows to use it and just isnt being given the chance to.

  2. Sounds like the people need training in this house before the dog.  Punishing an untrained dog is unfair to the dog.  However, you need to try and make the dog's owner more responsible of have both of them move out.  Who's name is on the lease?  If your name isn't then I wouldn't worry about it.  If your name is then you have a say is the upkeep of the house.  If this behavior is uncustomary for the dog, he might need a trip to the vet for a check up.  A dog with diabetes or an infection will lose their house training.

  3. It's going to be very hard. Why don't you just move out?

  4. Some people can't prioritize the needs of other people, let alone a dog. Dogs are needy and require consistency, praise and most of all some sacrifice. The first thing I do every morning is let the dogs out, before I take care of my own needs. It's easier that way in the long run,no accidents. It is very important never to punish the dog, only praise it for doing the right thing. Sounds like you're the only one who's truly concerned about the dog and it's problems. Maybe the dog should belong to you. Bad behaviors in dogs are due to owner's inconsistency as a rule.

  5. go to petsmart or petco and pick up special carpet cleaner for dog pee. it will get rid of the stain and smell. they have some for steam cleaners also. was the dog used to going outside before moving in? it doesnt sound you have a fenced yard either. some ideas to try that i did with my puppy: leave toilet lids down, dont let him drink from it. give him some water in a small or medium sized bowl next to the food. only give him like an hour to eat, then put it away. about an hour after you give him water, walk him. when he pees in the house discipline him and be slightly forceful. when no one is home. lock him in the bathroom. if its your moms dog, she needs to take him for a regular walk outside every 3-5 hours. a scheduled feeding and regular walks should help. good luck. its hard to teach an old dog new tricks. :-)
