Question:

Dog question...(part two) Dog owners & D.V.M please?

I should have asked this when I asked the question about the beagle and my GSD pup. I have never had a female dog before, so therefore I don't know what to expect the day after she's spayed. I just called and made an appointment.

1.) Will she be in a lot of pain?

2.) Should she be kept in her kennel for just a couple days so she can rest a bit?

3.) How soon could she eat, after the surgery? (which I'm sure that she won't be very hungry right after)

4.) Do the vets usually keep her overnight?

5.) How long do the "stitches" stay in?

I have tons of other questions, but I don't know what to say or ask! I'm sure most of these I can ask my vet. For anyone that has had their loved dog spayed, or a Vet, I could use your advice.

Thanks in advance

  1. Can you tell me why you don't ask your veterinarian these questions?

    1. Probobly. You can get oral pain meds for her from the veterinarian.

    2. Yes.

    3. Within 6 hours. She'll probobly spend the night at the hospital so

      they will feed her.

    4. Yes.

    5. 7-10 days

They may give you an E collar to put on her, so she won't chew her stitches out.

  2. 1.) Will she be in a lot of pain?  No--as long as the vet gives you pain medication for her at home. Ask about this prior to the spay, she should have this for pain for 2-4 days at home.

2.) Should she be kept in her kennel for just a couple days so she can rest a bit?  Yes, she should be kept quiet, no running or jumping, leash walked.  I see she is an outside dog--she should be kept inside for several days (hopefully permanently!) after the spay to make sure her incision stays clean, and that she isn't too active outside.

You need not clean or apply anything to the incision site at all, not even water.  It should be kept dry and clean.  If infection occurs, talk to your vet.

3.) How soon could she eat, after the surgery? (which I'm sure that she won't be very hungry right after)    She may be hungry that night, but a small meal is best.  Don't be surprised if she still has no appetite the day after the spay.  Any longer than that, call your vet for advice.

4.) Do the vets usually keep her overnight?  Some vets will keep a spay patient overnight, this is mainly to make sure that she is not overactive.  However, I would ask if there will be staff overnight monitoring her.  If not, and you can assure that she will be kept calm and monitored at home, then that might be a better option than staying the night.

5.) How long do the "stitches" stay in?   Sutures are removed 7-10 days after the spay.  Usually the follow-up visit with suture removal is part of the cost of the spay procedure.   Your vet should give you information on monitoring the incision site, and what signs to look for as far as possible infection, etc.  She should go home with an elizabethan collar (cone) to prevent her from chewing on the incision.  A dog can rip out sutures in less than a minute, and to go back for her to be re-anesthetized & re-sutured would be expensive.

    Good luck!

  3. i had my dog spayed a few months ago and she wasn't in alot of pain the injection the vet gives takes a while to ware off i imagine so it wasn't too painfull, i don't think she should stay in the kennel treat her as normal, it took a day for my dog to start eating again but she ate as normal. my dog was kept in over night but i was allowed to fetch her the next morning. and I'm unsure about this last question my dog had dissolving stitches which i think lasted around 3 weeks. keep the area clean bathe with warm water. don't touch it though if the dog doesn't like it, and normally the vet puts a funnel type thing on the head to stop them from biting stitches make sure its kept on this will prevent stitches from coming undone, any more questions ill try and answer

  4. The Vet will keep them overnight. The stitches will stay for 2 weeks. You have to clean the stitches with salt and water everyday. They'll be fine, they'll eat after you've taken them home. The Vet will tell you everything.

  5. After the operation of being spaded, you'll more than likely have to carry her around until the medicine that shes given for the procedure to wear off... It should take that long to do it all and most of the time they don't eat anything or drink but they will slowly start eating again..

and as for the stiches ask the vet about that one.. best of luck

  6. A lot will depend on the clinic.  Most no longer keep them overnight.  We tell people to offer them a half meal that first night- but don't worry if they don't eat.  Most of the time the sutures come out 10-14 days after sx, however some vets put in buried sutures in the skin and they don't need removal. Ask your vet these questions and see if they have a post op handout sheet for aftercare- it helps to have something to take home to refer to.

  7. 1. she might be sore

    how old is she?

    2. no, but she shouldn't be allowed to play rough and only outside on a leash

    3. i fed that same night i took her home, no vomiting, some dogs might though as a normal reaction to anethesia

    4. yes

    5. they dissolved in a couple weeks

if the stiches open, it's no biggie, the only time to worry is if you see any discharge or color change (which would be caused by an infection). both my dog and cat were spayed and for both their stitches opened but the vet didn't even use surgical glue.

use a wet, warm cloth to gently press on the site 2x a day for 30-60 seconds. that will help with pain and keep it clean.

  8. she won't be in a lot of pain they will give her pain medication. yes she needs to rest for a few days, but kept under supervision for she's not allowed to run and jump. she can eat after the surgery but only a little bit at a time so she doesn't get sick. yes they usually keep them overnight just to make sure shes doing well. the stitches stay in for about a week. they will probably use disolveable stitches.

but don't worry she'll be fine and the vet will give you a paper when you go and pick her up of what she can and can't do and how much she can eat and about the stiches.
