Dog question.........?

ok yesterday i had my mate over and she had her dog with her shes a westland terrier and is 2 months old,my dog is a yorkshire terrier its a she and she is 2 years old,we put her dog out the back and the two dogs start attacking each other,is it because their different breeds or both girls?

Neither.

Dogs don't fight for reason like same s*x or breed differences, they fight because one feels threatened or there are being protective.

Letting two dogs met face to face should take a little bit of time and space.. Just "throwing" them together isn't a good idea. Some one mention b/c of a territory issue is why they fought..this is possible but it may not be the main reason why.

By throwing together I didn't mean it literally... which is why i used quotations. By throw together i mean you put them together without first allowing them to see each other at a distance and then slowly come towards each other and smell each other while on a leash. I do not know exactly what you did.. but this is a very common mistake people make when introducing dogs for the first time, they put them together without taking the necessary steps. Take a look at the article called getting another dog.. even though you aren't getting one the same sorta of rules apply when introducing new dogs to each other.

Ummm are you saying a 2 year old female attacked an 8 week old puppy?????

Normally if 2 females are dominate then if the other entered the other's territory then yes a fight will occur. Same sexes normally do not get along but there are exceptions, that is up to the dogs...

If they were actually fighting, your dog probably felt like her territory was being invaded.  But it's hard to say, a 2 month old puppy most likely was trying to play with your dog.  Were they play fighting or really trying to harm each other?  If you want them to be friends you can try introducing them to each other again in a neutral area like a park or a place where neither one is the "boss" there.

How socialized is the 2 year old dog?  Generally breeds and s*x of the dogs have nothing to do with it.  If the older dog was not socialized she may never take to another dog in her yard.  Try introducing them on neutral territory such as the park or while out walking.  You may even want to walk them together but far enough apart they can't reach each other.
